Anti-acne effects of Castanea crenata bur extract and identification of active compound

Abstract Acne vulgaris is a common disease of the pilosebaceous unit. Hyperseborrhea, follicular colonization by Cutibacterium acnes and complex inflammatory state are pathogenic factors acne vulgaris. In present study we investigated anti-acne efficacy Castanea crenata bur extract (CBE) in vitro searched active compound for mitigating hyperseborrhea. sebocytes, CBE inhibited sebum synthesis through downregulation sterol response element-binding protein-1 peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ expression. also 5-alpha reductase activity which associated with androgen-induced production. Moreover, showed anti-inflammatory effect C. free fatty acid-induced condition suppressing Toll-like 2 activity. Anti-inflammatory was observed keratinocytes via inhibition NF-κB translocation into nuclei. Finally, identified ellagic acid as an inhibiting production CBE. These findings suggest that have potential to be multi-target agent good source anti-sebum compound.
